Steve Farrington (Member)
Steve and Sharon have four children and have been homeschooling with Heritage for 11 years. Steve is a CPA. He has his own consulting practice providing accounting and managerial services.
A message from Steve: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." (Deut. 6: 4-9)
Ron Stormoen (President)
Ron Stormoen and his wife, Vicki, have nine children and have been homeschooling for 17 years. Ron is an attorney. Additionally, he serves as a small claims court judge and teaches law at a local college
A message from Ron: We believe homeschooling is the best environment to train and nurture our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord and to provide them with a godly world and life view, which equips our children to pursue excellence and take dominion in their various callings to the honor and glory of God.
Vince Kingsley (Vice President/Secretary)
Vince and his wife Lori have four children and have been home schooling with HCS for 14 years. Vince is a Senior Vice President Bank Manager for a local financial institution.
A message from Vince: We began home schooling our children when our oldest son was entering into the eighth grade. It was during a season when the Lord, by His grace and mercy, was drawing us to Himself. We believed that the current education system was counter productive in training our children with Christian values and beliefs. God had placed the conviction in our hearts to home school when we learned this truth from God's Word; "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6
Mary York (Principal)
Mary and Scott have seven children ranging from eight to twenty-four years of age. They have been home educators for seventeen years, all of them with HCS. Their eldest graduated from Patrick Henry College in June '09 and their second son will graduate from Patrick Henry in 2012. Mary has been the administrator of the East County 1 Class Day for twelve years and is now serving as the school principal.
A message from Mary: Scott and I pursued home schooling for our children when it became apparent that our eldest was not achieving academically what we knew he was capable of in private school. After much research, we decided that the tutorial approach of home education best offered the academic results we desired. What we found after several years of home schooling and adding more children to our home school mix was that it created a family integration unknown by either of our families growing up. It shielded our family from many peer pressure issues, and it became a source of additional intellectual stimulus for us as parents, as well as for the children. Finally, it has enabled an extra layer of instruction in the issues of faith, so that, like Paul addressing Timothy, we can assert, "how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."
Ricky Feria (Treasurer)
Ricky and Cheri have been homeschooling their three children with Heritage Christian School for fourteen years. Ricky works as an associate pastor at South Bay Community Church in National City.
A message from Ricky: The Bible tells us to diligently teach our children God’s commandments and principles at all times. I believe a child’s education from institutions outside of the home limits our potential to fulfill this command. Home schooling allows us as parents to be with our children almost all the time, guiding them towards God and the things that honor Him in the course of real, everyday life. And the beautiful thing is that we as parents are not just training our children in the ways of righteousness; in fact, God is also using our children to help us become more like Him. See Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Mike Chism (Member)
Mike and Terry have three children. Each of them have been homeschooled with Heritage Christian School. Mike is the owner of a paint contracting business in San Diego
A message from Mike: Home schooling is, as one way to put it: "God's way of fixing two generations at once." For me home schooling was a way of weaving my Christian beliefs and convictions into the day to day of life. It gave me a platform to not merely pass on academic skills to my children but especially and primarily the faith and my love for the Lord. I believe that education is an inescapably religious activity and that it is incumbent on Christians to educate their children in a Christian manner. Home schooling was the means God providentially guided us into.
Robin Brown (Member)
Robin and his wife Candy have five daughters and have been homeschooling for the past 20 years. Their oldest is a teacher, second is married and a nurse, third is married and getting a Liberal Arts degree, and their fourth is in nursing school. Robin is the CEO of Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla.
A message from Robin: When Candy and I first started to homeschool, it was primarily for the purpose of protecting our children from the harmful influences of modern culture and to ensure that they were receiving a quality education. Much of our focus was on curriculum selection and SAT scores. Over time I began to realize that our homeschooling efforts were, in effect, an extension of our lives as Christians. The Bible teaches us that in Christ are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and calls us as parents to bring our children up in the training and instruction of the Lord (Eph 6:4). As I have grown in my walk with the Lord, I have come to realize that our little homeschool has allowed me many opportunities to more fully become the type of husband and father that God desires.
Bob Alm (Member)
Bob and Karen have 12 children from 27 to 5 years old. They have been homeschooling for 22 years. The last 14 years with Heritage. Bob is a General Contractor and Real Estate Investor.
A message from Bob: When Karen and I began homeschooling our 5 year old son fathers were going to jail for homeschooling. The question friends asked was "Can you do that?" Now it is legal and even the recommended schooling choice of Rush Limbaugh and Dr. Laura. There are many things I have learned about home schooling. It is a more efficient use of the child’s time, mom is the best teacher for her children, home work happens during school and we get to live more of our lives together. Homeschooling gives me the opportunity to enjoy and raise my treasured ones without the static interference that can be present with government schooling. I can help them learn how to live loved without having to defuse so many emotional mines that come from other forms of group education. Homeschooling has served us well.
